From Traditional Thai Plant to Economic Crop
How kratom moved from a familiar community plant into Thailand's legal agricultural economy after the national policy change in 2021.
For generations, kratom was known in Thailand as a familiar plant grown close to local homes and farms. It formed part of everyday rural life for farmers, fishermen, and labor workers in several regions of the country.
On August 24, 2021, Thailand removed kratom from the list of controlled narcotic plants. This legal change marked an important turning point. Kratom could then move from a traditional community plant into a legally recognized agricultural crop.
Since then, kratom has become part of a broader agricultural economy. Farmers have begun developing commercial kratom gardens, improving cultivation systems, and organizing production with clearer standards and traceability.
This transition reflects a larger shift in Thailand's agricultural landscape. A plant once associated mainly with local knowledge is now being developed through legal trade, modern farming practices, and growing interest from international markets.
